A couple of important news caught our attention last week. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the level of global investments in green energy was at a record in 2015. That’s in spite of low fossil fuel prices. Here are links to a video clip as well as an article on the subject.
This news is very good indeed! It’s very hard to predict the price of oil but experts seems to agree that at $30/barrel, this is clearly not sustainable. It’s reasonable to think that oil prices could be on the rise as soon as the second half of 2016 once the built-up Iranian reserves have been consumed and some US shale producers have gone bankrupt. Nouveau Monde believes that the growth in renewable energy investments should continue in 2016.
We also came across this article that talks about a new product launched in the energy storage industry. What is very interesting is that the manufacturing costs seem to be falling very quickly.
May we also remind you that in October, GM said publicly that they were getting their Lithium Ion battery cells for the Bolt at an astonishing cost of $145/kWh. This price point appears to be 4 years ahead of what GM was forecasting!
2016 is shaping up to be a very big year for energy storage. This bodes well for the lithium ion battery (LIB) industry and its supply chain providers. Nouveau Monde believes that the rapid development of the North American LIB manufacturing capacity will eventually filter down to local graphite producers. Nouveau Monde is in a unique position to meet the requirements of LIB manufacturers. We thus feel confident that our high purity graphite can be further processed locally, using green and affordable hydro-electricity. This will assure LIB manufacturers a security of supply of graphite that has been mined and processed ethically, with a very low environmental footprint and at a better cost than artificial graphite.
