The local transformation of our graphite into value-added products is part of our commitment to sustainable development. Graphite from the Matawinie property is suitable for transformation into spherical graphite and expandable graphite because we are able to bring it to very high purity levels. Flake size and distribution are also ideal for diverse applications.

HYDRO-QUÉBEC AND NOUVEAU MONDE FOR GRAPHITE TRANSFORMATION
We are proud to have signed a License Agreement with Hydro-Québec as well as a Research and Development Agreement on graphite transformation for use on lithium-ion batteries.
This collaboration will allow us to commercialize the technologies Hydro-Québec has developed in more than 30 years such as micronisation, spheronization, purification and coating of natural graphite, preparing it to serve the lithium-ion battery market.
This collaboration is a concrete step towards Quebec’s strategic positioning in the lithium-ion battery market. Hydro-Québec is helping us set up a pilot line at our Saint-Michel-des-Saints demonstration plant.

We already foresee the creation of almost 180 jobs in the region with our graphite mine project and the second transformation of natural graphite. The collaboration announced today adds to our initial project and concretizes our desire to maximize the benefits of Quebec’s graphite. It will certainly lead to the creation of new quality jobs in a leading sector.

Spherical graphite is the most used anode material in lithium-ion batteries. Natural graphite has many advantages over synthetic graphite, including its superior charge capacity and lower cost. Its purity, however, must be higher than 99,95%. The most common procedure uses hydrofluoric acid which presents serious health and environmental problems. Therefore, new methods respecting the principle of sustainable development must be developed. Nouveau Monde Graphite wishes to apply a new approach for purification, using renewable ressources such as Quebec’s hydroelectricity and reducing to a minimum the generation of residues.
Expandable graphite consists of high quality crystalline flakes. Expandable graphite belongs to a group of products called intumescent. The main property of intumescents is their expansion capability when heated. They are used for important industrial application such as additives to plastic membrane roofing and bituminous coatings.
