A Portrait of the Haute-Matawinie

The territory of Haute-Matawinie is composed of two municipalities : Saint-Michel-des-Saints and Saint-Zénon, and the Manawan indigenous reserve. Its population totals nearly 5250 inhabitants. A significant portion of the population resides seasonally in the area. In 2015, there were 51 700 permanent residents and the population doubles to almost 111 000 when seasonal residents are taken into account,  according to data from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy (Public Health Direction, 2017).

The forestry sector occupies an important place in this region. Despite the ups and downs of this industry over time, the activity continues to be an economic driver, particularly with the reopening of the sawmill and non-timber forest products (NTFPs). The presence of construction, transportation, warehousing and retail sector enterprises accounts for more than half of the companies.

Recreation and adventure tourism play an important role to diversify the local economy, as reveals he presence of inns ans hamlet resorts around the many lakes.  Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, quad biking and water sports are important activities in this region.
